over vacation i read WHAT IS THE WHAT and if you haven't read it, you should too. there are many stories in it that may break your heart. the wretchedness of greed, power, racism and colonialism cursed more than 27,000 sudanese boys to walk hundreds of miles to escape civil war. many did not escape death. of those that did, some have been resettled in the US. but life for them is still not easy.

I not only read this book but also had the opportunity to see Valentino talk about his experiences and read sections from the book as well. It is an amazing story and goes so beyond just talking about how it was to walk those hundreds of miles, but as hotpants puts it so well, also about the struggle to create a new life here in the good ol' US of A. Everyone should read this book! Plus, Dave Eggers is a freaking genius!
